Although your goal is to give a rule violator the opportunity to correct the behavior, sometimes you will have no choice but to dismiss an employee because of inexcusable behavior. Certainly, acts of gross negligence that cause accidents or illegal acts must be met with swift termination. As unpleasant as this may be, your staff must understand that certain behavior will not be tolerated. Any action short of termination is bound to be interpreted as weak by the offender’s peers. They may even feel resentment at having to continue to work with someone who has committed a major offense.
